The MHA Nation's greenhouse, which covers roughly two hectares, is almost done with the first phase. The Native Green Grow Greenhouse, also known as NG2, in Parshall, is scheduled for a grand opening on Nov. 26.
Chaiman Mark Fox told Minot City Council members in Monday's meeting that the greenhouse could produce close to 2 million pounds of food every year. It will operate by capturing flared gas from oil wells and converting it into energy to grow food all year long.
"We're hoping that you'll walk into your local grocery stores—Walmart or wherever it may be—you'll look down and you'll see locally grown, NG2, strawberries, cucumbers, lettuce, etc.," said Fox.
Fox also mentioned notable progress in energy development on the reservation, like increasing crude storage capacity from 300,000 barrels to up to 5 million. He also talked about selling liquid natural gas, or LNG, to foreign markets.
