In 2024, global exports of fresh fruit and vegetables grew modestly by 2% compared to the previous year, when exports totaled 146 million tons. The top exporters, China, Spain, and the Netherlands, all experienced growth in 2023. China's exports increased by 20%, from 11.1 million tons in 2023 to 13.4 million tons in 2024; Spain's exports rose by 9%, from 11 million tons to 12 million tons; and the Netherlands' surged by 18%, from 11 million tons in 2023 to 13.4 million tons in 2024, mainly driven by re-exports of products received from other countries.
Mexico ranked as the world's fourth-largest exporter of fruits and vegetables in 2024, with 11.3 million tons, a 6% decline from 12 million tons in 2023.
Ecuador took fifth place with 6.5 million tons in 2024, a 12% decrease from the year before, although the 2023 figure of 7.3 million tons isn't fully confirmed in the UN Comtrade database.
The United States ranked sixth-largest exporter, with 6.2 million tons, a 7% increase. It was followed by Turkey with 4.4 million tons and Guatemala with 4.3 million tons.
The UN Comtrade database compiles detailed annual and monthly global trade statistics by product and trading partner, serving governments, academic institutions, research organizations, and businesses. Data collected by the UN Statistics Division covers around 200 countries and accounts for over 99% of global merchandise trade.
