Young entrepreneur establishes 1-hectare vegetable greenhouse to make up for lack of production in district

Entrepreneur Serdar Gunes built a state-of-the-art 10,000-square-meter cucumber greenhouse in Diyarbakir's Ergani district, which is significantly increasing output and creating jobs. 20 people are employed by the greenhouse, which produces 4 tons of cucumbers every day.

With government assistance, veterinarian Serdar Gunes built a cucumber greenhouse on a 1-hectare land in Diyarbakir's Gunestepe neighborhood of the Ergani district. Gunes and his staff of 20 labor hard in their greenhouse, harvesting an average of 4 tons of cucumbers per day.

By constructing a second greenhouse, Gunes, who used a government-backed loan to build his first, hopes to boost output and triple employment. According to Gunes, who gave information about the project, they started in the animal farming industry in 2017 and are now concentrating on greenhouse farming to meet local demands by 2025.

Gunes stated: "We constructed our greenhouse on a 10,000-square-meter enclosed space. Right now, we're busy growing cucumbers. We'll switch to other crops like tomatoes and lettuce in the future. In the past, produce was typically brought in from Antalya and Adana, as greenhouse farming was uncommon in this area. We identified this shortage, though, and proved that greenhouse farming is feasible in this location. Every day, we produce about 4 tons of cucumbers, which are sent to different provinces, mostly to chain markets."
