A new project aimed at improving the competitiveness and sustainability of the Kurdish vegetable sector has been launched in Sulaymaniyah. The initiative builds on a detailed market analysis conducted last year and brings together key stakeholders across the value chain, including farmers, traders, suppliers, retailers, hotels, government representatives, and consumers.

The program focuses on strengthening the cucumber and tomato value chains in the region by defining market specifications, testing packaging solutions, identifying suitable packing locations, and supporting the adoption of food safety practices. The project is being implemented in collaboration with Green Solution and guided by Dr. Sulaiman Ali, with support from the Dutch Enterprise Agency.

Key areas of focus
The initiative will work to foster cooperation between value chain actors through in-field workshops and market exposure visits. Efforts will also target improved sorting and packaging systems to reduce post-harvest losses and improve the presentation of local produce.

Food safety is another central component, with practical coaching and the introduction of safety protocols to ensure healthy and traceable products. In addition, the program will encourage the testing of new varieties aligned with market demand to help farmers better meet consumer preferences.

Organisers said the project aims to build a more coordinated and transparent value chain that reflects the journey from production to consumption, ensuring added value at each stage. The collaboration between local and international partners is expected to contribute to a more efficient and market-oriented vegetable sector in the region.
