Dutch greenhouse companies explore opportunities in northern Italy

In early October, a delegation of Dutch companies active in greenhouse technology visited the Italian regions of Veneto and Lombardy. The three-day trade mission focused on sustainable cultivation solutions and strengthening collaboration between the Netherlands and Italy.

The trip was organized by the LAN team (Agricultural Attaché Network) of the Dutch Embassy in Rome, in cooperation with Nomisma, the AVAG Greenhouse Technology Center, and Phaff Export Marketing.

Through company visits, presentations, and meetings with regional governments, research institutes, grower organizations, and cooperatives, participants gained a clear picture of the Italian greenhouse sector. The regions offer favorable climate conditions and strong infrastructure, but also face challenges such as labor shortages, limited investment capacity, and generational transition.

The mission revealed significant opportunities for collaboration. Italian growers showed strong interest in Dutch expertise in areas like climate control, irrigation, lighting, automation, and integrated pest management. Meanwhile, the Dutch participants gained valuable insights into local cultivation practices and ongoing research projects, including those at Veneto Agricoltura and the University of Padua.

"It was inspiring to see how Dutch and Italian partners can complement each other," the organizing team commented. "The openness and mutual exchange of knowledge provide a solid foundation for deeper collaboration within the European greenhouse industry."

A comprehensive report of the mission will soon appear on Agroberichten Buitenland, the information platform of the LVVN Attaché Network (LAN)
