Provincial officials of the Balkh Agriculture, Irrigation, and Livestock Directorate, have reported a significant increase in the number of greenhouses in the province due to the return of refugees from Iran.
They stated that approximately 700 new greenhouses have been established over the past half-year. According to officials, the number of greenhouses has increased from 800 last year to 1,500 this year, with crops such as cucumbers, bell peppers, tomatoes, and various other fresh vegetables being grown.
They mentioned that public awareness programs have been initiated in some districts, and this year, 130 farmers have received saffron bulbs. Currently, surveys are ongoing to distribute improved seeds along with chemical fertilizers to farmers in the province.
Conversely, some greenhouse farmers expressed to Radio Omid that while their operations are improving, they are not yet up to standard. They requested assistance with equipment and called for measures to prevent the influx of low-quality agricultural products at the ports.
