Improved soil life with pure, liquid fertilizers

Since early 2025, Northstar Organics has been using Biota fertilizers. "The main reason Northstar Organics switched to Biota is because our fertilizers are liquid and exceptionally pure," explains Peter Klein from Biota Nutri. "They also weren't happy with the topdress fertilizers they had been using — those products were dusty and simply didn't deliver the results they wanted."

Northstar Organics is owned by Canadian grower Shawn Dirksen. "Shawn was introduced to Biota through Cees van der Ende, and that's how we got in touch with him," Peter adds.

To ensure the best technical support, Biota asked soil specialist Robby Grass to assist Shawn, working closely with Biota Netherlands' technical team. Robby conducted soil biology assessments at Northstar Organics to monitor soil life. The first measurements took place in February 2025, followed by a second round in September 2025.

The data collected by Robby paints a clear picture of how the soil life has developed over time. The results are shown in the graph below.

"There is a huge increase in Beneficial Nametodes and a decrease in the number of fungi," Peter points out.

Furthermore, an increase in beneficial protozoa and a decrease in anaerobic protozoa are visible.

In addition to the clear improvement in soil life, Shawn also notices higher crop quality, better fruit development, and an increase in production.
