Sanifruit introduces SaniTomato and SaniPepper, natural extract-based post-harvest treatments for tomatoes and peppers

For over 37 years, Sanifruit has been dedicated to developing natural solutions that extend the shelf life of various crops. "We have demonstrated with solid data how many kilos of food waste we can prevent per crop. We tailor customized proposals for each customer, based on scientific research and ongoing testing with real clients to verify the effectiveness of our treatments," says CEO Javier Biel.

Beyond enhancing the freshness of fruit and vegetables, Sanifruit's solutions also help vegetable export companies decrease complaints upon arrival, thereby reducing food losses and adding value for clients.

According to Alejandro Gil, the company's Sales Manager, the sector has fallen behind in terms of residue-free post-treatment options for bell peppers and tomatoes, for both conventional and organic products. That's why Sanifruit developed two natural alternatives: SaniTomato and SaniPepper. "These innovative solutions, based on natural extracts, aim to minimize food waste by providing healthier, higher-quality produce with a longer shelf life, leading to greater satisfaction among retailers and end consumers," he stated.

In May, Sanifruit hosted a post-harvest conference for vegetable exporters at Coexphal headquarters in Almeria. Sandra Mañas, Sanifruit's technical expert in post-harvest management of peppers and tomatoes, discussed the main issues caused by fungus, bacteria, and physiopathologies affecting tomatoes, and how Sanifruit's products mitigate effects like rot, dehydration, and cracking. Mañas recommended using SilCover, a biostimulant based on orthosilicic acid, during the cultivation phase for protection. For the post-harvest phase, she recommended SaniTomato, which helps prevent rot, dehydration, and branch deterioration. "Without good pre-harvest practices, there can be no optimal post-harvest results," she stressed.

Their tests with red and yellow bell peppers showed that using SaniPepper after disinfection and rinsing led to almost 50% fewer infections with the Botrytis fungus and a reduction of over 45% in the Erwinia bacterium. The ideal approach, they say, is: Thorough washing, controlled disinfection, and then treatment with SaniPepper.

Sanifruit provides a comprehensive service package for exporters through its post-harvest program, which is built on three pillars: SaniNature, SaniSystem, and SaniService.
