Philippines: Strawberry grower submerged after typhoon

La Trinidad Strawberry Farm was once again submerged after Super Typhoon Nando battered Northern Luzon, causing extensive crop damage and halting sales for vendors dependent on tourism and local buyers.

Super Typhoon Nando entered the Philippine Area of Responsibility on September 20, 2025, and made landfall on Panuitan Island, Cagayan, on September 22 with maximum sustained winds of 215 kilometers per hour. The storm struck only days after Typhoon Marisol exited Luzon on September 18, leaving farmers with little time to recover.

Although Benguet was placed under Signal No. 1 on September 21 and its northern towns under Signal No. 2 the following day, La Trinidad quickly felt the impact as strong rains and winds flooded strawberry farms and damaged protective structures.

A farmer said September's planting season was heavily affected, as both newly planted and maturing strawberries were lost. "The farm was flooded, the crops were destroyed, and even the tunnels and protective structures were damaged. Some strawberries that were about to be harvested were ruined by the flood and strong winds. On top of that, no tourists came to buy our products," the farmer explained.
