Following a summer which saw four heatwaves and widespread drought, UK farmers are increasingly investing in greenhouses structures to combat UK weather challenges.
According to greenhouse control system specialists, Tomtech, an increasing number of growers in 2025 are choosing to grow under glass to mitigate the risks of unpredictable weather, while also benefiting from a longer growing season throughout Autumn and winter.
Tomtech have also seen increasing demand for intelligent greenhouse control systems, which provide growers with data-driven insights into the environmental conditions within their structure.

"Although the British public have enjoyed the summer sun, recurrent heatwaves and a lack of rainfall have made 2025 a challenging year for farm field growers. We have seen more farmers have been investing in greenhouses equipped with systems to create and maintain an ideal environment for producing high yield crops" says Krzysztof Hernik, Managing Director at Tomtech.
According to the Met Office, this year's UK summer was the hottest since records began in 1884, with a mean temperature of 16.1°C.
Due to the high heat experienced over the most important growing months, 2025 has experienced drought-like conditions which have significantly impacted nationwide crop yields.
Given the unpredictable weather that the UK now faces, greenhouse structures and new innovations in environmental control are helping growers adapt to the challenging field conditions.
Greenhouse environmental control systems, are enabling growers to create and maintain more favourable conditions.
"Our Tomtech systems can seamlessly manage temperature, humidity, light, pH levels, nutrients and more. By providing more precision over greenhouse conditions, we're not just working towards smarter, securer and more efficient solutions for farming - we're actively helping UK farmers cultivate bigger and better crops" adds Krzysztof.
"With the sun setting on summer 2025, now is the ideal time for UK farmers to invest in greenhouses and continue growing throughout the colder months. As British-based horticultural experts, we hope to support more growers with the technology needed to maintain the ideal environment for growing high-quality crops, regardless of the weather!"
