Cleaning sets new requirements for growing gutters

Stronger cleaning makes differences in resistance visible. New research by Metazet shows which materials can withstand powerful cleaning agents and which require extra attention.

With the increasing hygiene requirements in greenhouse horticulture, growing systems are being cleaned more intensively. This not only calls for adjusted protocols, but also for a critical look at the materials being used. To support growers in making the right decisions, Metazet recently carried out extensive practical research into the chemical resistance of different types of materials.

The study demonstrates that factors such as coating type, surface structure, and the way cleaning agents are applied (concentration, exposure time, and rinsing) have a direct impact on the durability of growing systems. In particular, materials with a porous coating prove more vulnerable to damage when cleaning agents are not used correctly.

"The reality has changed: where mild cleaning used to be sufficient, powerful agents are now often applied," says Luke van Adrichem, CEO of Metazet. "We see it as our responsibility to investigate that reality and share this knowledge with the market. This way, we can prevent damage and make better decisions together."

In the study, different materials were compared, including coatings such as polyester, polyurethane, PVC laminate, and the polypropylene material 'Second Skin'. Materials with a closed structure showed clear advantages under more intensive cleaning.

Metazet has compiled the results in a test report. This report provides growers with insights into the chemical resistance of the tested materials and offers practical recommendations to prevent damage and extend the service life of gutters. In addition, a separate protocol document is available with guidelines and points of attention for gutter cleaning at crop changes.
