In hilly or mountainous areas, building a traditional water reservoir or basin can be quite a challenge. A dug-out basin requires a large, flat piece of land, and before you know it, you end up at the bottom of the valley, often at the expense of fertile ground that could otherwise be used for crops.

A smarter solution, says Bas van der Elst, is to level part of a hillside. On this flattened surface, a galvanized corrugated steel water tank can be easily installed on a concrete ring or tiled base. Depending on the available space, Hendic supplies these silos in diameters up to 40.5 meters and heights up to 6.02 meters—good for more than 7.5 million liters of water storage.

Bas explains: "We fit these corrugated steel tanks with a DelafleX liner to make them completely watertight. With a floating DelafloaT cover, you can prevent algae growth and evaporation. This way, you can store enough water in spring to keep your crops irrigated during the increasingly long dry periods. It's a smart and sustainable way to manage water in warm climates."
