US: University of Florida Extension opens new educational greenhouse

The University of Florida Institute of Food and Agricultural Science Extension and Sustainability hosted a ribbon cutting Tuesday for their new Educational Outreach Garden Greenhouse. The facility is located at 6600 Clark Road, just east of I-75 near Twin Lakes Park.

The facility is funded by the Sarasota County Infrastructure Surtax, the Charles and Margery Barancik Foundation, William G. and Marie Selby Foundation, and Friends of Sarasota County Parks.

This greenhouse was also made thanks to years of advocacy and fundraising by Master Gardener Volunteers. The greenhouse was constructed by Halfacre Construction under the management of the Facilities Division of the Sarasota County General Services Department.

The educational greenhouse was supposed to open in 2024 but was delayed due to last year's hurricanes. The facility will help educate students and community members on a variety of things like sustainable landscaping, water quality protection and horticultural education. It's designed as a hub for hands-on learning. It will propagate Florida-friendly plants that require less water and fertilizer, ultimately protecting water quality.
