Mexico kicks off bell pepper production

The bell pepper crop is underway out of Mexico. "We just started with a crop and we are seeing very, very promotable volumes out of both Jalisco and Nayarit," says Jose Luis Obregon of IPR Fresh, adding that product in those regions looks to have good size consistency, quality and good yields.

The seasons from both regions have started on time. Jalisco began production three weeks ago and will continue there until January. Nayarit just began harvesting last week and it will stay in production until February-March. Meanwhile, harvesting will begin in Sinaloa in December and will continue until mid-June.

Bell pepper demand steady
Demand for colored bell peppers is good. "As more volume hits the market, that slows down a bit. Thankfully we have very good contracts in place," he says, adding that good quality product is also helping the movement of bell peppers stay steady.

Meanwhile pricing is settling in. "It starts high and then comes to a place where once everybody is in production, it settles down," says Obregon. "As we're up and running for the season with good promotional volumes, we're discussing availability with customers to provide them with the consistent supply we have. We are looking forward to the season."
