Nigeria: Taraba greenhouse initiative backed to combat food crisis

Governor Babagana Zulum of Borno State has commended the Taraba State Greenhouse Project, also known as the Cucumber Farm, saying that the project would boost food security and mitigate hunger across the North East and the country.

Zulum gave the commendation while commissioning the remodeled facility in Jalingo during the North East Governors' Forum summit, where the governors raised concerns over looming food shortages next year.

A recent report by the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) raised alarms over an impending food crisis in Nigeria, predicting that 30.6 million people will face acute food and nutrition insecurity. The FAO's analysis highlights that the northeastern states will bear the brunt of this crisis. The Taraba State's Greenhouse project in July 2025 achieved its first substantial harvest of green peppers and cucumbers.

Special Adviser on Media and Digital Communications to Taraba State Governor Emmanuel Bello, in a statement, Friday, said the Borno State governor described the commissioning as a revolutionary step in agricultural transformation. Other governors present at the event included Ahmadu Fintiri (Adamawa), Bala Mohammed (Bauchi), Inuwa Yahaya (Gombe), and Mai Mala Buni (Yobe).
