Students in eight schools within the Jackson Olin Feeding pattern in Birmingham are returning this year to classrooms equipped with brand new, state-of-the-art hydroponic farming systems. These systems have been installed in science classrooms through a first-of-its-kind national partnership between NY Sun Works, Birmingham City Schools, Jones Valley Teaching Farm, and the City of Birmingham. The Hydroponic Classrooms will strengthen sustainability science education, increase student engagement, and generate hundreds of pounds of fresh produce each year.
The launch will take place on Tuesday, September 9, 2025, at Bush Hills STEAM Academy. Press tours of the new hydroponic greenhouse begin at 12:00 PM, followed by a speaking program at 1:00 PM. The official ribbon cutting is scheduled for 1:30 PM.
The event will be held at Bush Hills STEAM Academy, located at 901 16th St W, Birmingham, Alabama. Speakers include Birmingham Mayor Randall L. Woodfin, Birmingham City Council President Darrell O'Quinn, Superintendent Dr. Mark Sullivan of Birmingham City Schools, NY Sun Works Executive Director Manuela Zamora, and Jones Valley Teaching Farm Executive Director Amanda Storey. Principals, teachers, administrators, and students will also take part in the celebration.
