'red, glossy and firm'

Carmelian F1 new TOV for Italian market

"2025 was the definitive testing season for our variety Carmelian F1, which is attracting the interest of greenhouse growers specializing in the production of red TOVs", Simone De Martino, International Development with Fenix Seeds, says. The hybrid has been widely spread in the two most important growing areas in Italy: the south-eastern Sicilian strip that extends from Gela (AG), passing through Vittoria (RG) to Pachino (SR), and the Fondi-Sperlonga area in central Italy.

"This tomato already distinguished itself during the first years of trials for qualities such as fruit firmness, intense red color. It's combined with an important package of genetic resistances that includes IR: ToBRFV. It exceeded expectations by showing a marked adaptability to the different cultivation areas, and a nice homogeneity from the first to the last stage, constantly producing elegant fishbone-shaped clusters containing fruits weighing 160 grams each."

She adds this last characteristic has been particularly appreciated by growers willing a product that is as uniform and standardized as possible, throughout the harvesting and delivery period. This follows the transplant dates for which the variety has shown good adaptability in Italy: specifically, from September to February in Sicily and, during the periods that go from January to April, and between the end of July and August in the Fondi-Sperlonga area. "This is both for those who supply to the general fruit and vegetable markets, and for those who are dedicated to the service of large-scale retail chains and catering/restaurants."

"The development of this variety fully reflects the vision of the Fenix research group, which aims to develop hybrids that can satisfy both the needs of growers, who are constantly looking for higher and higher yields, and those of end consumers, who are increasingly careful and well educated on the quality and selection of products to put in the shopping cart", Simone adds.

"The development of Carmelian F1 has followed two complementary lines of work to combine, within a single variety, traits that enhance both yield and plant health. This is achieved through strong genetic resistances, while also ensuring excellent organoleptic qualities in the fruits. These include a glossy red color, notable firmness that provides a long shelf life, and suitability for extended transport, storage, or display on market benches. In addition, Carmelian F1 stands out for its elegant cluster and sepal structure—consistently healthy, compact, fleshy, and above all, neat—making it highly practical for quick and efficient boxing."

Carmelian F1 is now gearing up for the coming season, strengthened by the results and data gathered in recent years. "The technical team has developed an in-depth understanding of the variety and refined cultivation practices with subtle but effective adjustments that often make the difference in unlocking its full potential."
