VB takes action on CO2: electric driving and less flying

VB has achieved Level 3 on the CO₂ Performance Ladder. With this certificate, VB strengthens its structural commitment to sustainability within the international greenhouse horticulture sector.

"Sustainability is central at VB, which means we also critically examine our own CO₂ emissions," says CEO Edward Verbakel. The CO performance ladder certificate helps to structurally map, reduce, and transparently communicate VB's own CO₂ emissions.

VB has mapped its CO₂ emissions for 2024 and set clear reduction targets: a 10% CO₂ reduction in scope 1 and 20% in scope 2 by 2030 compared to 2024. Scope 1 includes direct emissions such as fuel consumption from the vehicle fleet, while scope 2 covers indirect emissions such as electricity consumption.

VB is taking concrete measures to achieve these objectives. For scope 1, the entire company car fleet will be converted to electric vehicles, with extra attention to employee awareness and guidance. For scope 2, VB focuses on reducing CO₂ emissions by cutting back on air travel where possible. In addition, all current and new employees are actively involved in the CO₂ targets, also while onboarding.

"The CO₂ Performance Ladder provides us with a framework to work structurally towards further reductions and to minimize our impact. We are proud of this step and see it as a foundation to further build sustainable solutions for our clients worldwide, together with our employees and partners."

Energy-positive building as a foundation
VB has been structurally working to make its own organization more sustainable for some time. Since 2020, VB operates from an energy-positive corporate office building in Naaldwijk, equipped with 390 solar panels that generate more electricity than the building itself consumes. VB already holds the GPR sustainability certificate and their office is prepared to be connected to a local geothermal heating network.
