Switzerland:

Lidl now uses cup plant trays for organic tomatoes

Lidl Switzerland has introduced an impressive innovation that shows that sustainability and innovation can go hand in hand. Swiss organic tomatoes are now sold in trays containing up to 35% cup plant fiber.

This decision is an important step toward a circular economy. Silphium perfoliatum, also known as cup plant, is a fast-growing energy crop that has long been used primarily for biogas production. Now it is being processed into a sustainable material that can replace packaging made from fossil fuels. The cup plant trays are fully compostable and biodegradable after use—an advantage that is also reflected in the LCA.

"Lidl Switzerland is thus underlining its commitment to the environment and setting an example for the entire sector. The use of cup plant is not only a sustainable alternative but also an example of how native plant resources can be used cleverly," explains Senior Key Account Marcel Petrick.
