Rains in Mexico make for a tough hot pepper market

Conditions for hot peppers in Mexico have been challenging lately. "Our growing region in Monterrey, Mexico has received a lot of rain in the past three weeks," says Mario Cisneros with Perlag Imports. The fields are muddy, which makes it difficult to go in and harvest. Additionally, water damage from the rain has impacted common pepper varieties like Jalapeno, Habanero, and Serrano. "The product that is being harvested and packed doesn't have the best shelf-life as it goes soft pretty quickly." The end isn't in sight just yet as more rain is coming according to the weather forecast.

In addition to unfavorable weather conditions, Mexico heavily competes with U.S. domestic hot pepper production this time of year. The high volume of product grown in the U.S. market slows down demand for Mexican hot peppers. As a result, many Mexican growers decide to keep their product in the domestic market for now as the returns are higher. This means Perlag Imports is not bringing in as much volume as they normally would.

Prices of Jalapeno peppers are in the medium range, around $16 - $16.50/box. "I expect they will go up a little bit more," commented Cisneros.
