Dutch State Secretary for Foreign Trade, Hanneke Boerma, recently visited Havecon Horticultural Projects in Bleiswijk. The visit highlighted the global strength of Dutch horticulture, the need to reduce export barriers, and the importance of closer cooperation between government and industry to expand international opportunities.

Export opportunities and hurdles
Havecon designs and builds complete greenhouse projects, from concept to delivery, and exports a large share of them to Europe and North America. In the past, Dutch greenhouse technology generated around 4 billion euros in export revenue, but that strong position is increasingly under pressure due to global instability and growing trade barriers.
Adnan Tunović, Chief Business Development Officer at Havecon, explained: "In the United States there is a huge demand for greenhouse construction, as the country seeks to reduce its reliance on imported food. Dutch greenhouse builders can play a key role in that. It's therefore vital that government and the sector work hand in hand to seize this opportunity. Of course, we also look at other parts of the world, but developments in the US make this especially urgent right now."
Innovation and sustainability in focus
During a tour of the production hall, the state secretary and her team were given an inside look at the entire process, from design and manufacturing to the actual construction of greenhouses. Along the way, attention was drawn to the innovative solutions Havecon is developing, with a strong focus on sustainability, energy efficiency, and adaptation to local growing conditions.
