Eurostat data on the 2024 harvests show that Portugal was the third-largest tomato producer in the European Union, with 1.7 million tons. Italy led with six million tons, followed by Spain with 4.5 million tons.
Overall, the EU harvested 62.2 million tons of fresh vegetables, including melons, in 2024. This represented a 6% increase compared to 58.8 million tons in 2023. Spain, Italy, and France were the leading producers of fresh vegetables, with 14.8 million tons, 13.9 million tons, and 5.8 million tons, respectively. Together, they accounted for 55% of the EU's total harvest.
By crop type, EU tomato production was 5% higher at 16.8 million tons, carrot production rose 6% to 4.7 million tons, and onion production increased 11% to 7.0 million tons compared to 2023. Within the EU, Italy accounted for 36% of the tomato harvest, followed by Spain with 27% and Portugal with 10%.
Meanwhile, EU production of fruits, berries, and nuts, excluding citrus, grapes, and strawberries, was reported at 24.3 million tons in 2024.
