This year's Tomatina tomatoes will come from Extremadura

The Buñol city council has decided to assign the tomato supply for the 78th Tomatina, the world's biggest tomato fight, to the Extremadura-based company Alius Trading 2015, SL, for €54,912 including VAT. The tomatoes will be delivered on August 26th, the day before the festival.

This year's contract was €5,000 less than the €59,994 contract awarded in 2024 to the Valencian company Frutas y Verduras Massanassa. The base budget for the tender stayed at €66,000, but the city council chose to award it to the lower-priced company, aligning with the savings policy it has followed since 2023.

In just two years, the cost of tomatoes decreased from €75,000 in 2023 to €54,912 in 2025. That's over €20,000 less for the festival's "raw material."

The new contract also brings a different type of supplier. Alius Trading 2015, SL, based in Badajoz and founded ten years ago, is a wholesale distributor of food, beverages, and tobacco. The company has just one employee and modest share capital (between €0 and €3,100). Its focus is on trade mediation and import/export.

In contrast, Frutas y Verduras Massanassa, a Valencian family business founded in 1992 by the Ribes brothers, operates a logistics network capable of distributing more than 30 million kilos of fruits and vegetables annually. In 2024, it supplied Valencian-grown tomatoes, a symbolic gesture in the history of the Tomatina.
