NL: 16 year old appreciates the varied work in the cucumber growing during her holiday job

Skipping school for a while and working in the greenhouse instead is still a popular choice for many students, although growers sometimes notice it's becoming harder to attract them for holiday jobs.

Local broadcaster Omroep West (link in Dutch) spoke with Sophie, who has a summer job in cucumbers at The Valley, where tomatoes are also grown.

"It's really varied work, and I do all sorts of things. Removing leaves, that's taking old leaves off the plants. But I also harvest tomatoes in the winter. Right now, we're picking cucumbers. Sometimes I help with sorting in the packing shed. I also really like the hours. You start early in the morning, at 7 a.m., but by noon you're already finished."
