China: Growers get boost thanks to dedicated bus route for vegetables

Jishou city in Xiangxi Tujia and Miao autonomous prefecture, Hunan province, has a specialized bus route designed to bring farmers directly to a vegetable market, effectively solving their last-mile transportation problem.

With local vegetables in peak season, the vegetable bases are bustling. At dusk, a green bus filled with fresh vegetables and farmers heads towards the Bayuelou farmers market 15 kilometers away. Launched in May last year, this service allows farmers to reach the market directly with a bus fare of just 2 yuan ($0.28) and an additional 1 yuan fee per bag of vegetables.

"In the past, it cost 50 yuan to hire a car to sell vegetables at the Bayilou farmers market," said Liang Guiying from Xinwan village. "But now, with the bus, it's much cheaper and convenient, and the income from selling vegetables has significantly improved lives."

Wang Zhengfu, general manager of Xiangxi Qiancheng Automobile Transportation Co, said: "In 2025, we will expand our services and launch a medical bus route for the elderly and a commuter bus route for intangible cultural heritage craftsmen to enhance people's happiness."
