Green zucchini prices in Almería remained below production costs for three months

Over three months, green zucchini prices at auctions in Almería have consistently stayed below cost. This is based on weekly and monthly analyses of both fine and thick green zucchini prices, which are derived from their daily auction prices in Almería.

Green zucchini production costs stand at 0.44 euros per kilo. However, the average auction price in April was only 0.34 euros per kilo. In May, the price dropped to 0.22 euros per kilo, and in June it recovered slightly, standing at 0.35 euros per kilo. The average price from September to June stood at 0.74 euros per kilo.

The fine green zucchini season started in September 2024 with a weekly average price of 1.36 euros per kilo. In October, the price increased to 1.53 euros per kilo. In November, the price fell to 0.90 euros, and in December it remained at nearly 0.89 euros. In January 2025, there was a slight rebound to 1.05 euros per kilo, followed by a drop to 0.59 euros in February. In March, the average price stood at 0.68 euros per kilo. In April, it fell to 0.37 euros and in May, to 0.24 euros per kilo. In June, prices increased to 0.38 euros per kilo, but remained below production costs.

Thick green zucchini began the season with an average weekly price of 1.02 euros per kilo in September 2024. In October, the price increased to 1.27 euros. In November, the price fell to 0.79 euros, and in December it remained stable at 0.80 euros per kilo. In January 2025, the average price stood at 0.90 euros. In February, it fell to 0.50 euros, and in March it rose slightly to 0.60 euros. In April, the average weekly price fell to 0.31 euros. In May, it decreased to 0.20 euros, and in June it stood at 0.33 euros per kilo.

This behavior is evidence of a concerning trend in green zucchini prices, which is affecting farmers' profitability, especially during spring months when prices remain below cultivation costs.
