Melon & Watermelon House Fair 2025 explored the latest breeding innovations

"From June 30 to July 3, 2025, Enza Zaden hosted its annual Melon & Watermelon House Fair, bringing together producers, exporters, traders and experts from across Europe and beyond to explore the latest in breeding innovation. With a strong presence in all major production regions, and leadership in areas like PDS-Iberia, overseas cantaloupe or watemelon-USA, Enza Zaden combines global expertise with local insight. More than just varieties, the company delivers tailored solutions that create value across the chain." "We work together with our partners, identifying opportunities and unlocking value," said Mario Noviello, Product Manager for melon and watermelon.

"During the event Enza Zaden stretched the importance of breeding not only for major traits as resistances, yield and shelf-life but also for innovations that can fulfil consumers demands in ready-to-eat, convenience and taste. The company presented convenient sized watermelons as Kalahari and Tyrion. Sunstone is their yellow-flesh watermelon, with a refreshing taste and an intense yellow colour."

A key highlight was Cracker Jack, a seedless Crimson-type watermelon gaining popularity in both fresh and processed markets (fresh-cut). Post-harvest trials showed it outperformed standard varieties combining taste and water retention—making it ideal for slicing and cubing. "Across multiple panel-test, consumers preferred Cracker Jack and Rio Grande above both ultra-firm and traditional varieties" noted Noviello. This dual-use potential offers growers flexibility and guarantees consumer".

Parallel to the melon and watermelon showcase, pumpkins were also featured in the field. As a leader in the Hokkaido segment, Enza Zaden is also advancing its butternut portfolio, with varieties suited for both fresh and processing markets. The standout here is Vaiana, a butternut with exceptional internal quality, rich taste, and vibrant flesh colour.

"This event is not just about showcasing varieties—it's about strengthening relationships and collaborating with all the players in the chain" said Noviello. "By bringing together producers and traders in one place, we create a unique opportunity for both sides of the value chain to align on expectations, challenges, and opportunities. These conversations are essential—not only for validating our breeding direction, but also for ensuring that what we develop in the field truly resonates in the market".
