As of June 2025, the film applied to coated seeds marketed by Sakata no longer contains microplastics. It is now 100% biosourced and biodegradable. Sakata EMEA has decided to anticipate a European regulation which will require seed manufacturers to stop using products containing microplastics by 2028.
"Sakata always strives to meet the needs of growers and consumers. This has guided our decision to innovate by choosing a microplastic-free polymer to anticipate future regulatory requirements, three years in advance," explains Matthieu Maxant, Chief Operating Officer.
Sakata EMEA has been carrying out tests on several seeds since 2020, first in the laboratory and then on a large scale, enabling the company to guarantee identical germination rates and an unchanged price for its customers.
Sakata combines ancestral know-how and high technology to create vegetable seeds that meet stringent requirements: yield, taste, disease resistance, adaptation to climatic events, etc. By developing high-quality varieties, Sakata contributes to improving nutrition and sustainable agriculture.
