UK: Record crowds exchange cucumbers for cocktails

This year's World Cucumber Day event, held on Friday June 13, saw 138 cucumbers exchanged across four venues in Keswick town centre during the hour-long "Cucumber Currency" promotion.

The total marked a 90 percent increase from last year's 73 cucumbers, nearly doubling the count from the event's inaugural year. Neels Ferreira, general manager of the Skiddaw Hotel, said: "The atmosphere was great – you could feel the buzz as soon as the clock struck 4pm.

"It's a great way to bring a little light-hearted fun to the town centre – and Keswick is really up for that."

Premium partners Hendrick's Gin and Fever-Tree Tonic supported the event. Iain Grant, who has overseen the promotion at Inn on the Square, said: "It's not every day you find yourself counting cucumbers behind the bar, but Keswick never fails to surprise."
