"According to forecasts drawn up on May 1st, 2025, French strawberry production is estimated at 76,000 tons for the 2025 campaign, which is close to last year's level (+1%, +600 tons). In April 2025, prices were 3% higher than in the 2024 season and 10% higher than the 2020-2024 average for the same month," according to Agreste statistics.
Rising yields compensate for slight drop in acreage
"The national strawberry area for the 2025 season will be 3,651 hectares, which is 1% less than the previous season and 5% below the 2020-2024 average. French strawberry production for the 2025 campaign is estimated at 76,000 tons, which is 1% higher than last year and 3% higher than the five-year average. Spring weather conditions were quite favorable, with greenhouse strawberry yields 3% higher than last year. Outdoor strawberries, on the other hand, suffered from bad weather, and yields are down (-6%).
The production calendar looks fairly similar to 2024, with production peaking in May. In the South-East basin, the campaign was slightly delayed due to a lack of light and the presence of fungi."
Marketing: Strong demand and firm prices at the start of the season
"In March, the demand was satisfactory and prices were higher than in 2024 (+14%), especially for round strawberries (+19%, compared to +2% for elongated strawberries). In mid-April, supply was slightly short of demand, but became more heterogeneous in terms of quality, and prices began to fall. The last week of April was very warm, speeding up the ripening of the fruit. Over the month as a whole, prices nevertheless remained higher than in 2024 (+3%) and the 2020-2024 average (+10%).
Between January and March 2025, strawberry exports (3,200 tons), including significant volumes of re-exports, were down by 24%, and imports (15,400 tons) were 4% lower than the same period in the previous marketing year. The foreign trade deficit in volume terms (12,200 tons) increased by 3% from last year during the period under review."
