Combimetal Carrera (Italy)

Above-ground strawberry farming systems continue to expand

The strawberry season in southern Italy is coming to an end, but Combimetal Carrera's installation of new above-ground, multi-tiered plants has never stopped.

In fact, a new structure is about to be completed in the region of Basilicata. Spanning about three hectares, it has a double row. It will be added to the existing company plants, which will double the surface area compared to a traditional field. Therefore, approximately one million seedlings will be transplanted for the next strawberry harvest.

"As a specialized and innovative company in the processing and manufacturing of steel structures, we are a reference point for farmers, even regarding new cultivation systems, which are initially met with skepticism," says Giusi Carrera, Combimetal Carrera's sales manager. "One of the company's strengths is our ability to install gutters directly in the field. Thanks to innovative, transportable machinery, we can speed up installation times and reduce transportation costs by delivering only rolls of sheet metal to customers. Making the gutter on site minimizes the number of joints between metal sheets."

The length of the gutter is 27.80 meters and is drawn directly on the client's site

Other installations will be carried out throughout Italy in the coming summer months. The double row is the most popular type, with gutters about 70 cm apart. "Reducing physical effort and improving working conditions for employees during cultivation operations are among the primary reasons companies invest in the above-ground sector. Other reasons include a cleaner and tidier environment, the ability to speed up and simplify cultivation operations, better ripening and uniformity of fruits and plants, and improved nutrition and defense management."
