Edge Hill group drives change to boost UK food security

Edge Hill University experts have partnered with West Lancashire Council to lead action on improving food security in the UK. Edge Hill's Greenhouse Innovation Consortium (GIC) collaborated with the council to host the Future State workshop aimed at tackling the needs and priorities of the nation's agricultural economy and protected edible sector – fresh produce which is grown under cover in greenhouses or polytunnels.

As the demand for locally grown, sustainable produce continues to rise, the sector has proven to be a critical part of the UK's commitment to enhancing food security, reducing carbon footprints and supporting rural economies.

Dr Sven Batke, Reader in Plant Science at Edge Hill and Chair of the GIC, said: "The workshop was more than a conversation – it was a turning point.

"Growers, researchers, policymakers and industry leaders came together with a unified purpose: to secure the future of the UK's protected edible sector as a cornerstone of the UK's agricultural future.

"The insights and recommendations generated will not only inform Parliament, but also shape a resilient, sustainable and locally driven food system for generations to come."

The event, attended by delegates from across the UK protected edible sector at Edge Hill's Ormskirk Campus, the workshop identified workshop identified challenges and opportunities which will now inform guidance and best practice for the sector.

Cllr Melissa Parlour, lead member of Economic Regeneration and Green Growth at West Lancashire Borough Council, said: "West Lancashire is often referred to as the 'salad bowl of England' due to producing around 15% of the country's fresh produce.

"Lots of businesses and jobs rely on its rich soil, so I am delighted that experts have come together to ensure this industry can continue to thrive while meeting the challenges of the future."

The recommendations provided at the workshop will carefully be compiled into a comprehensive document to share with Parliament, ensuring that the voices of those working in the field of protected edible production are heard at the highest levels of government.
