Latvian strawberry harvest likely to be late, low quality

The unusually cool and rainy spring has also affected strawberries, so many farms are expecting a later harvest than usual, Vidusdaugava Television reported on 28 May.

In Stukmaņi, in the Aizkraukle municipality, the strawberries are still only in bloom. The Arbeiteri family started growing strawberries last year and left their life in Rīga for this new venture.

"We have our own land, and it was a shame that it wasn't being used. That's how we ended up with strawberries. At first, we couldn't decide between potatoes and strawberries, but we realised that strawberries taste better, they are more appealing, they have that summer flavour," said Elizabete Arbeitere.

This year, the changing weather conditions, which have not been favourable, are causing concern. The seedlings have been affected by cold weather and frost. The seedlings have also had too little sun and too much rain this spring, which is delaying the strawberry harvest.
