Egypt boosts tomato exports to Bahrain by 50%

Egypt has expanded its export of fresh and chilled tomatoes to Bahrain, positioning itself as a key player in this market. EastFruit analysts report that Egyptian exporters sent 3,800 tons of tomatoes to Bahrain in 2024, reflecting a 50% increase from the previous year and a tenfold rise since 2022. In Q1 2025, Egypt exported 5,500 tons valued at $2.2 million, marking a 45% increase over the prior year.

Bahrain ranks among the leading destinations for Egyptian tomato exports, surpassed only by Saudi Arabia in 2024. The bulk of these exports happens in winter months, corresponding with peak demand in the region.

Within Bahrain's tomato import market, Jordan and Syria dominate, supplying over 80% of the total volume. Egypt accounted for 10% of these imports in 2024. Jordan remains the primary competitive challenge due to overlapping supply periods. However, Jordan has encountered production challenges, including adverse weather and policy changes, which led to reduced exports to Bahrain in 2024.

Egyptian exporters have taken advantage of these changes, significantly increasing their shipments and filling the gap left by Jordan.

The outlook for Egypt's continued growth in Bahrain's tomato market is positive. However, increased competition from suppliers like Syria and Oman, alongside possible recovery in Jordan's exports, presents challenges. To maintain its standing, Egypt might focus on investments in product quality, logistics, and international marketing strategies.
