Farmers in Brahmanbaria are increasingly adopting the mulching method for cucumber cultivation, leveraging modern agricultural techniques to boost yields and reduce production costs. With the upcoming Eid season, many growers are optimistic about securing strong profits from their cucumber harvest.
According to the District Department of Agricultural Extension (DAE), the method is being promoted through agricultural exhibitions and modern farming outreach programs. In the current season, cucumbers have been cultivated using mulching on 86 hectares of land across the district. Farmers report producing 40 to 45 maunds per bigha, earning Tk110,000 to Tk120,000 per bigha in the wholesale market.
Uzzal Mia, a farmer from the Mohanpur area in Dhansar village under Talshahar East Union, said he cultivated cucumbers on two bighas using the mulching method. "Yields are higher and profits are better. Though the initial investment is slightly higher, the cost drops by half in subsequent cycles," he said.
Another farmer, Ratan Mia, who has been using the technique for three years, echoed similar sentiments. This year, he cultivated cucumbers on 2.5 bighas, spending around Tk45,000–50,000 per bigha. "From the second time onwards, the expenses go down and profits rise. I now earn a net profit of Tk70,000 to Tk80,000 per bigha," he said. Amenna Begum, sub-assistant agriculture officer of Sadar upazila, said 16 hectares of land in Talshahar East Union are under cucumber cultivation using mulching. "Cucumber is a short-duration, high-profit crop. It can be cultivated up to three times a year on the same plot," she noted.
