India: Crops damaged by unseasonal rain

Unseasonal rain hit parts of Nashik district on Tuesday night, damaging crops and orchards on around 1,767 hectares.

The rain, along with hail, affected parts of Chandwad, Kalwan, Surgana, Igatpuri, Niphad, Malegaon, and Satana talukas and of the district on Tuesday night. Various crops and orchards like onions, papayas, vegetables, and mangoes in these talukas were also destroyed.

According to the primary assessment conducted by the state agriculture department, crops and orchards on a total of 1,767 hectares in 325 villages of nine talukas of the district, involving 8,311 farmers, were affected.

Onion crops on 850 hectares were affected the most, followed by mango orchards on 486 hectares and vegetables on 278 hectares. A maximum of 465 hectares of crops and orchards were damaged in Surgana taluka, affecting 3,739 farmers from 126 villages. Mango orchards on 362 hectares were damaged in Surgana taluka alone.
