This report summarizes the latest trends in volume and prices for seasonal perishable commodities. Prices reflect open (spot) market sales by first handlers for products of generally good quality unless noted. The focus is on key commodities based on seasonal movement.
Asparagus
Movement from Mexico through Arizona, California, and Texas remains light due to cooler weather delaying crop progress. The first F.O.B. report is expected the week of May 11. From Washington, the movement is stable with moderate trading and slightly lower prices. Extra Fancy 11-pound cartons/crates of standard and large are mostly $28.95–$30.95. Pyramid 28-pound crates of bunched standard and large are mostly $58.00–$60.00. Peru imports through Southern California are increasing. Trading is slow. Green prices are lower; white prices are higher due to very light supplies.
Avocado
Mexican movement through Texas is increasing. Trading is fairly active for 70–84s, moderate for others. Conventional 32s are $70.25–$72.25; 36s $68.25–$70.25; 40s and 48s $64.25–$66.25; 60s $50.25–$52.25; 70s $43.25–$45.25; 84s $27.25–$28.25. Organic 48s are $82.25–$84.25; 60s $70.25–$72.25; 70s $52.25–$54.25. From California's South District, movement is slightly up. Early trading was active, late moderate.
Cucumber
Mexico movement through Nogales is decreasing. Trading is moderate with slightly lower prices. Medium 1 1/9-bushel cartons are mostly $15.95–$17.95; fair quality $12.95; ordinary $5.95–$6.95. Small is $10.95–$12.95; large is mostly $13.95–$15.95. Cartons 24s are $5.95–$6.95; 36s $7.95–$9.95. In Texas, movement is also down. Mediums are mostly $17.95–$18.95; fair quality $12.95–$14.95; ordinary $8.95–$9.95. Large mostly $20.95–$23.95. In Florida, movement is stable.
Green bell pepper
Mexico movement through Nogales is down. Trading is moderate. Prices are slightly lower. Extra-large 1 1/9-bushel cartons are $20.95–$22.95; large $18.95–$20.95; medium mostly $12.95; fair quality $10.95–$12.95. From Florida, the movement is steady. Extra-large prices are higher; others are much higher. Jumbo is $15.35–$17.85; extra-large is $16.35–$18.85; fair quality is $10.85–$12.00.
Strawberry
Santa Maria, Oxnard, and Salinas-Watsonville, California, are seeing seasonal increases. Prices are slightly lower. Flats of 8 1-pound containers with lid, medium are mostly $10.00–$12.00; organic $16.00–$18.00 in Santa Maria and Oxnard; $18.00–$22.00 in Salinas-Watsonville. From Mexico via Otay Mesa, prices are lower: medium $8.00–$10.00; organic medium $10.00–$14.00.
Tomato
From Mexico through Texas, movement is decreasing. Trading is slow to fairly slow. Vine Ripes 2-layer 4x4s are mostly $7.37–$7.95; 4x5s $7.39–$7.95; 5x5s $7.13–$7.95; 5x6s $6.64–$6.95. 25-pound cartons loose 4x4–4x5 are $8.30–$8.95; 5x6 mostly $8.30. Through Nogales, movement is increasing. 4x4s and 4x5s are mostly $7.37–$8.95; 5x5s $7.13–$7.95; 5x6s $6.64–$6.95; loose 5x5–5x6 sizes mostly $8.30.
