Mexico surpassed Spain in pepper export value in 2024

In 2024, Mexico overtook Spain in global pepper export value, a position the two countries have traded over the past decade. Together, they account for half of the global exports of this vegetable. A Hortoinfo report reveals that, despite a decrease in the worldwide export volume since 2021, the value reached a record of 7,350.88 million euros in 2024.

Hortoinfo's information is based on data from the UN Statistics Division, COMTRADE, under code 070960, which corresponds to fresh or chilled peppers.

In 2024, Mexico and Spain exported 48.37% of the world's peppers. Mexico led exports with 1,182.57 million kilos and a 28.54% share, while Spain contributed 821.67 million kilos and had a 19.83% share. They were followed by the Netherlands, Morocco, China, Canada, and Turkey.

Mexico also led pepper export revenues in 2024, with sales totalling 1,941.44 million euros. Spain ranked second with 1,570.78 million euros. The Netherlands, Canada, Morocco, the U.S., Turkey, China, France, and Belgium completed the top ten ranking by revenue.

Canada obtained the best price per kilo in 2024 with 2.89 euros. It was followed by the U.S., the Netherlands, Spain, and Mexico.

Mexico sent 97.84% of its peppers to the U.S. The main market for Spanish peppers was Germany, followed by the United Kingdom, France, the Netherlands, and Italy. The Netherlands exported mainly to Germany and the UK, while Turkey exported mainly to Germany and Romania. There is no 2024 data for Morocco, but in 2023, its main destinations were Spain and France.
