Scirtothrips dorsalis causing struggles for Spanish growers

Little-known pest Scirtothrips dorsalis is beginning to create concern in the horticulture industry. In Spain, in particular, this thrips species is beginning to cause damage to a wide array of crops, such as fruit, vegetables, and ornamental plants. It is their rapid reproduction and adaptability that is causing the biggest concern for growers.

An update on the situation in Spain has been published in the April 2025 edition of the EPPO Reporting Service. The Mediterranean nation has begun to apply official phytosanitary measures in accordance with the national emergency plan. These include the destruction of infested plant material, trapping of the thrips, and chemical treatments to eradicate the pest.

In the Netherlands, it is assumed that the new thrips species will not be able to survive inside Dutch winter outside greenhouses (Dutch text).
