"We wanted to give our tomatoes a face"

The girl on the tomato box that smiles just like the Mona Lisa

© LLS GrowersThere is a girl featured on the box of Red Vine brand tomatoes, and she drew the attention of Dutch columnist Wouter Klootwijk. "The Dutch tomato girl smiles as charmingly and quietly as the Mona Lisa painting. But this girl isn't fictional. She is a real girl on a tomato packaging."

Wouter wrote about this in a column that appeared in several Dutch newspapers last Friday, such as Noordhollands Dagblad (€).

Wouter acknowledges that the girl isn't world-famous—at least, not yet. He appreciates the personal touch on the packaging and is especially captivated by the girl's smile. But who is this girl? She is the daughter of one of the tomato growers at Red Vine, photographed by her mother. "We wanted to give our tomatoes a face," the grower tells the columnist. Wouter believes they've succeeded, noting that no other tomatoes have a girl on the packaging with such an enigmatic smile.

In his column, Wouter writes about the smile: "But her smile! It seems as if we know it well, and half the world knows it. A modest, captivating, mysterious smile. A smile whose meaning has been discussed for centuries. Not too long ago, psychologists claimed after research - although how can you even research a smile - that it is the smile of a woman who is very satisfied about something. Admittedly, this is classic psychologists who assert such things confidently, because no one can contradict them."
