Mariano Zapata, president of Proexport, has stated that it is still too early to assess the full economic impact of the recent power outages on Spain's fruit and vegetable sector. "We are dealing with fresh produce," he explains, "and while some companies were able to keep their cold storage units running thanks to backup generators, others were not so fortunate."
The disruption has caused widespread operational challenges across the industry. "Yesterday was a day of chaos and disorder," he continues. "We are highly dependent on electricity, and without power, we were left without any communication with customers and suppliers. Managing orders was extremely difficult—many of them weren't even processed. Basic operations such as loading goods or pre-cooling produce became completely unfeasible."
Companies are now preparing to file claims and hope to receive compensation through their insurance providers. However, the full scope of the damage remains unclear.
As of this morning, businesses located in the AlmerÃa region were still without full access to electricity. Power continued to fluctuate throughout the area, with internet and telephone connections proving equally unreliable.
