U.S. confirms Mexican tomato dumping, 21% duty expected

The Court of International Trade has confirmed allegations that Mexico is exporting tomatoes to the United States at dumping margins, reportedly reaching up to 273%. This decision follows investigations by the Department of Commerce.

As a result, the Department of Commerce plans to terminate a suspension agreement from 2019, with a 21% duty on Mexican tomatoes set to be imposed in July. This development has elicited mixed reactions. Some industry stakeholders support the imposition of duties, while others express concerns about potential increases in tomato prices in the upcoming season.

Observers note that the broader impact of these measures will be evident as domestic tomato production in the United States continues to decline. The implications for high-tech greenhouse growers remain a topic of discussion, with attention on how these changes might affect the market dynamics.
