"Across the globe, blueberry growers are pushing for better yield, improved berry quality, and more sustainable farming practices", says Leena Jain with Vaighai. "Growers reevaluate their substrate options for better yield, improved berry quality and more sustainable farming practices." He sees a shift in several blueberry production regions, including Peru and Mexico, toward coco-based substrates such as Gro-Med Blue B Blend. "It brings growers up to 20% higher yields, stronger root development, and uniform plant growth across hectares."

Particular blend
This particular blend—composed of 70% coco coir and 30% husk chips—is being implemented across operations aiming to align substrate performance with the physiological needs of blueberry plants.
The structure is designed to support aeration and drainage. "The layered mix ensures just the right balance of air and moisture. Fine particles on top retain moisture, while coarser husk chips below improve drainage—perfect for blueberries that hate soggy roots", Leena shows, adding the substrate is fully customizable. "Planting holes, drip hole positions, bag sizes—everything can be tailored to farm layouts and irrigation systems."
Blueberry growers working with multi-year production cycles note the relevance of substrate durability. The Gro-Med bags are built to withstand extreme weather and last multiple growing cycles, and the Blue B bags come with 5-year UV resistance, reducing replacement costs. "And since our products are triple-washed, screened and 99% free from soil-borne pathogens, our substrates promote healthier crops while minimizing the risk of disease outbreaks."
Deployment across scaled operations
One commercial blueberry farm in Peru reported a rollout of over 200 hectares using the Gro-Med Blue B Grow Bags. "We saw uniform flowering, faster fruiting, and an impressive increase in size and sweetness. Switching to Gro-Med was a game-changer", the grower said to the Gro-Med team. The Gro-Med brand, developed by Vaighai Agro, has supplied coco substrates to over 75 countries, according to the company.
