VBT figures week 9

Belgium: Greenhouse vegetable prices stay below average

Tomato prices are cautiously rising. In week 9, VBT median prices reached €1.916 per kilo for loose tomatoes and €1.485 per kilo for vine tomatoes. However, these prices remain below the five-year average.

The average price for cucumbers dropped in week 9 to 45.1 euro cents per unit, also falling below the five-year average.

The first peppers are slowly being harvested. For now, the VBT median price is in line with the 2023 price trend. Across all colors, the price stands at €2.26 per kilo. However, volumes remain very limited.

Sunny spring weather could help boost demand for lettuce and cucumbers, among other crops. Last week, the price for head lettuce increased to 41.3 euro cents per unit. However, this price rise has not yet pushed it above the five-year average.

At the auctions of the Federation of Belgian Horticultural Cooperatives, an average of €8.38 per kilo was paid for strawberries in week 9.
