The cost of growing a hectare of vine tomatoes has increased by 22% in the last five seasons

According to a report produced by Hortoinfo, based on data provided by the Junta de AndalucĂ­a, the cost of growing a hectare of vine tomato in greenhouses in the province of Almeria has increased by 14,108 euros (22.23%) over the last five seasons reaching 77,586 euros.

In the 2023/2024 season, labor was the most relevant cost standing at 34,928 euros per hectare, which i.e. 18.09% or 5,351 euros more than in the 2019/2020 season.

The second highest cost corresponds to seeds and seedbeds, with a value of 7,945 euros, i.e. 20.67% or 1,361 euros more than in the 2019/2020 season.

Depreciation of facilities is in third place, with an average cost of 7,054 euros per hectare, 27.26% or 1,511 euros more than five seasons ago.

The cost of fertilizers and manures amounted to 5,871 euros per hectare, 50.81% or 1,978 euros more than in the 2019/2020 season.

Phytosanitary products ranked fifth, with 3,262 euros per hectare, a 25.75% increase equivalent to 668 euros in the last five seasons.

Producers allocated 1,727 euros per hectare in biological control in the 2023/2024 season, 15.13% more than five seasons ago. Auxiliary material for this control costs 1,361 euros per hectare, 18.35% more.

Water has cost 2,979 euros per hectare, 51.76% more than five seasons ago.

Detailed costs include family labor, greenhouse depreciation, facilities, machinery, and others. These costs depend on factors such as transplanting dates, cycle duration, size and location of the farm, and phytosanitary conditions, according to the Price and Market Observatory of the Junta de AndalucĂ­a.
