Biodegradable paper bags replaces substrate in new propagation system

Selecta one is set to unveil a new innovation; the RCS 2.0 system. "This advanced propagation system roots cuttings offshore in special biodegradable paper bags, requiring minimal energy and no substrate. The bags are made from cellulose fibers, are entirely free from fossil-based plastics, and are fully biodegradable. The compact size of the rooted cuttings ensures efficient transport, reduces space requirements, and generates significantly less waste compared to traditional rooted cuttings", the Stuttgart-based breeding and young plant company states.

Delivered in paper strips, the cuttings are ready for immediate use by customers. "They can be potted manually on conveyor belts, tables, or potting machines. Alternatively, the process can be fully automated with the TTA Cutting Edge system, a cutting-edge transplanting solution developed in collaboration with Dutch automation specialist TTA. This innovative machine precisely cuts the paper strips, grips the cuttings, and automatically pots them into growing media."

The RCS 2.0 system will make its debut at IPM 2025. Following the launch, a pilot phase will gather insights from practical applications across a range of crops.

Per Klemm, Managing Partner of Selecta one, commented: 'Selecta is known for innovations in the field of cultivation such as Pink Kisses or NightSky. Now, with the RCS 2.0, we are launching a real innovation in the field of process optimization and production. It is the result of great internal collaboration across various locations and with external partners. It shows the potential of thinking in terms of solutions for our customers and how this potential can be realized through collaboration. We have developed a real world first, a system that is environmentally friendly, resource-saving and efficient, adds value at various points in the value chain and with which we will set new standards on the market.'
