Ebtech Glasshouse Systems has completed a thermal screening renovation for Edward Baarda Ltd., a tomato and cucumber grower in Brough, United Kingdom. The project, spanning 9,954 m², involved comprehensive upgrades to the glasshouse's screening systems, aimed at improving heat retention, shading, and energy efficiency.

Tony Walker, Managing Director of Ebtech Glasshouse Systems, explains that maintaining optimal conditions in a glasshouse is very important for crop health and productivity. "Poorly maintained or damaged screens can significantly affect heat retention and shading within the growing environment. This renovation addresses those challenges directly," he states.
The renovation process at Edward Baarda Ltd. involved replacing several big components of the existing system. All nylon top and bottom wires, steel drive wires, sealing pelmets, and drive shaft bearings were replaced. Additionally, new cloth was installed to improve the glasshouse's thermal efficiency. The choice of Svensson B.V. Luxous Light FR cloth was a component that stood out in the project's success. With a 13% direct shading value and a 47% improvement in energy savings, this specialized cloth ensures that the glasshouse maintains the optimal conditions needed for year-round crop production.

The project also included the installation of new apex screens between two of the glasshouses, providing even better control over environmental factors such as temperature and light exposure. Tom Bibby, Project Sales Manager at Ebtech, highlights the importance of timing in this project. "We worked closely with the customer to ensure that the renovation was completed during the crop turnaround period. Meeting the project deadline was important to avoid any disruption to the growing cycles."
"The importance of having well-maintained and effective screening systems in place cannot be overstated," Tony adds. In commercial glasshouse operations, factors like heat retention, shading, and energy efficiency are essential not only for optimizing growing conditions but also for reducing operational costs.
"With the new screening system in place, Edward Baarda Ltd. can expect better climate control and significant energy savings in the years ahead," he says.
For growers facing similar challenges with outdated or damaged screens, Ebtech Glasshouse Systems offers tailored solutions to enhance thermal efficiency and maintain a sustainable growing environment.
As Tony concludes, "If you have any screening requirements, please don't hesitate to reach out to us. We are committed to providing the best solutions for the horticulture industry."
