Romanian spring crops: Drought having an impact of over two million hectares

Florin Barbu, Romanian Minister of Agriculture, has stated that drought in the country has already had an impact on two million hectares of spring crops.

Compensation payments were discussed and confirmed by the Prime Minister of at least 200 Euros per hectare. Drought reports substantiating this information need to be drawn up by 15 September for compensations to be paid in October. The earlier payment is to ensure secured financial resources for the next fall sowing season.

Linking to Romania's high cereal demand, the country will have enough quantities to provide thanks to irrigation of 1.6 million hectares. In terms of food security, these quantities will cover local consumption needs, livestock demands as well as exports. '"From the point of view of food security, Romania has the necessary cereals both for its own consumption, including for the consumption of the livestock sector and for export," said Florin Barbu.'

Will only about 100 000 hectares of autumn crops be damaged due to the drought, areas of concern remain more with spring crops.
