Marco Bergman: "Challenges in marketing orange and yellow bell peppers outside the color mix"

Strong start for the bell pepper season

"The bell pepper season has kicked off strongly. The quality of the bell peppers is outstanding, and the prices have been stable so far. This gives us confidence in a successful season," says Marco Bergman of Harvest House. "At the start of the season, we felt strong competition from Spain. However, from week 18/19, most of the major European retailers have switched to Dutch bell peppers. As usual, the European retail sector takes the largest share of the available supply."

"There was also special demand for Dutch bell peppers from the United States early in the season," Marco continues. "Although sales there have decreased in recent weeks, we expect an increase in demand within a few weeks. Over the past weeks, we've done a lot of trade with Eastern European countries. However, we expect this demand to decrease once the Eastern European market can supply itself with its own outdoor cultivation, probably around mid-July."

"Of course, there are challenges. For instance, there's significant pressure to find enough outlets for yellow and orange bell peppers, both now and in the future. These colors are usually sold as part of a color mix, but there seems to be less and less room for them as individual items. Fortunately, we see that wholesale markets often find creative ways to still get these bell peppers to the consumer. Thus, these bell peppers also find their way to the consumer."

"Furthermore, the weather in the Netherlands hasn't really been in our favor, but we hope the sun will start shining more soon. As soon as the weather improves, we see bell pepper sales continue to rise. We look forward to the coming weeks with confidence and remain committed to a successful bell pepper season," Marco concludes.
