Study tour on protected cultivation in Egypt:

'Unlocking doors for Dutch companies to join the Egyptian market'

Are you a Dutch company interested in exploring business opportunities in the field of protected cultivation in Egypt? Several Dutch companies have begun to consider Egypt as a potential destination, given the significant development in this sector within the country. Egypt has emerged as a promising destination for Dutch companies seeking to promote opportunities in the area of Climate and Water Smart Agriculture.

In collaboration with Delphy, Dutchhouse Delta, and funded by RVO, the Netherlands-African Business Council (NABC) organized a Study Tour to Egypt from February 11th to 15th, 2024. This initiative aimed to explore the growing opportunities within Egypt's protected horticulture sector and establish partnership possibilities for Dutch companies. The study tour provided a comprehensive overview of Egypt's protected horticulture ecosystem, including inputs, technologies, and market trends. Participants gained valuable insights into the off-taker perspective and the demand for fresh produce in local supermarkets and export markets.

Visits to greenhouses operated by Cherryland Egypt/Kwekerij Roodpunt showcased the advanced technology employed in Egyptian horticulture. These facilities demonstrated the potential for Dutch companies to supply greenhouse structures, materials, and automation systems.

Knowledge exchange seminar and matchmaking
The seminar organized during the tour gathered key industry stakeholders to discuss the challenges and opportunities in Egypt's protected horticulture sector. Participants engaged in a productive exchange of knowledge and ideas, exploring topics such as cost optimization, training needs, and the need for practical skills. The matchmaking session and networking events facilitated connections between Dutch companies and Egyptian growers, producers, and technical experts. These interactions created opportunities for future partnerships and collaborations.

Seminar on the Future of Protected Horticulture in Egypt

Proven strategies for building successful partnerships in Egypt
The study tour identified that transferring technologies solutions from the Netherlands has to be customized to the Egyptian context, and through potential collaboration with local partners, this will create a bigger impact. The tour identified collaboration areas with local businesses, including the import of seedlings, hydroponics systems, plastic covers, and training in advanced techniques. This highlights the demand for Dutch expertise and solutions in the Egyptian market. All participating Dutch companies expressed interest in exploring public-private partnerships or other activities in training and education in Egypt. This demonstrates their commitment to supporting the growth of the sector and establishing a presence in this promising market.

The study tour to Egypt on protected horticulture and cold chain supply provided a valuable platform for Dutch companies to gain insights into the opportunities and challenges within Egypt's expanding horticulture sector.
